Nagoya

The intention is that this becomes a photo gallery of Nagoya. Nagoya is a nice place to live, so I thought I might try and make a collection of photos that gives an idea what the city is like.

I do not have a great collection of photos at the moment, but I will work on trying to get a collection of images that shows what Nagoya is like.

Nagoya's symbol, the shachihoko

"The above kanji can actually be pronounced in two different ways. When pronounced "shachihoko", it refers to the mystical animal mentioned above. When pronounced "shachi", it means grampus; a dolphin or orca. This is a source of confusion, even among the Japanese." - Shachihoko Wiki Page

Nagoya Castle, rebuilt in the 1950's, the original dates from the 1600's. With so much rebuilt or reconstructed due to fires, earthquakes and WW2 bombing, in is not unusual to visit a reconstruction. So I recommend a visit. It is imposing, the gardens are beautiful and it has nice views from the Dojon/tower.

BTW, in the photo you can just see two golden shachihoko on the top of the castle dojon.

The "Towers" complex above Nagoya station. The towers contain JR Takashima shopping, the Marriott hotel. Nagoya Station is/was theworld's largest train station by floor area (410,000 m2).

Sakae from the Sunshine Sakae Ferris wheel. This gives the impression that the city has wide straight streets, do not be fooled. most of the city is full of small windy roads and most motorways are two lanes each way-Photo - Apr 07

In fact, the roads you see in these photos were especially created after WW2 - "The majority of Nagoya was burned down during World War II. During Nagoya’s reconstruction, thinking about future traffic, appearance, and especially disaster prevention, 100 meter wide streets were designed to run through downtown. Hisaya-odori crosses Nagoya from north to south, and Wakamiya-odori runs east to west." - Nagoya City Website
