Melbourne 'world's top city'
"Melbourne has retained its position as the best city in the world to call home.
Often derided as Bleak City by Sydneysiders, Melbourne topped a survey of 130 cities, narrowly beating out the other four Australian capitals surveyed - because its weather rated the best.
Sydney lost ground because its crime rate was rated on a par with New York and London". - The Age Newspaper

A once in a lifetime experienceAbout.Melbourne
Melbourne is the 2nd biggest city in Australia and it has been our hometown since we both moved there to go to university in 1989. Melbourne's sister city in Japan is Osaka.Melbourne was founded in the 1850's and with the gold rush in the 1850's and 60's, Melbourne was very wealthy. This history has meant that the city has wide roads, beautiful gardens and many historic buildings.
Melbourne prides itself on it's sporting identity. Some of the major sporting events in Melbourne are the Grand Prix at Albert park, The Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse, the Australian Open Tennis at Rod Laver Arena, the AFL Grand Final and the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
Melbourne has good quality reasonably priced restaurants, a great cafe culture where good coffee and cakes are expected, the Melbourne Arts and comedy Festivals are always strong and the NGV is known for its ability to draw blockbuster exhibitions.

The MCG is Australia's best known sporting venue. The home of the AFL Grand Final and the Boxing Day Test. The premier sport stadium in a city proud of its love for sport.

"Lets meet on the steps of Flinders Street Station" was once a common saying in Melbourne, especially when the station was the key connection from the suburbs into the city. Still a key icon of Melbourne .
Looking up Flinders Street toward Flinders Street Station.
The Melbourne Arts Centre. Melbourne's other pride (other than sport) is its love for culture. I believe Melbourne has the best art galleries in Australia, especially the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). The Arts centre itself is a beautiful building, and a great venue for plays and concerts. It also has a great carpark with good access to Southbank..

Jeff's Shed (also called the Melbourne Exhibition Centre).
Jeff Kennett the controversial Premier of Victoria organised the building of the M.E.C., but it has gained the nickname Jeff's Shed due to its architectural design as a homage to the Aussie Shed.

The new Southern Cross Station (Formally Spencer Street Station) . I hated using the station while it was being built, but the outcome is spectacular.

Ballarat is my mothers home town. I went to secondary school in Ballarat and always enjoy a trip homeSturt Street, the main road in Ballarat. Ballarat is an old gold mining city and famous in Australia for the Eureka Stockade. With the wealth from gold, Ballarat has a number of historic and picturesque streets as well as a small but enjoyable art gallery.
