tokyo Motor Show 2007

The 40th Tokyo Motor show was another excuse for us to visit Tokyo. The show itself was a huge spectacle. The web official site recorded 152,100 visitors on the Saturday that we were there.
Girls,Girls,Girls.....
OK what was the theme for the show? What did the crowd really want to see? well the answer was the girls. People did not come to see the cars but serious cameramen with hundred of cameras unabashedly pointed them directly at the show girls and rarely at the cars. There were tripods, huge zoom lens and hundreds of photos of the girls. It was quite strange really. We expected there to be sexy girls with the cars, but it was more than that, rather it was girls standing and crowds of men encircling them.

One of the girls posing. But it was not just girls on the stands who were the focus of the camera, girls in the information booths, on the show floor or doing demonstrations had crowds around them.

The focus was not on the bikes

At the Ford stand

Hi boys

A quick look at the digital displays told the story. Lots of zooming and close ups.

Well at least the Toyo Tyre girls are famous for sexy calenders. This was in the "Tyres and Audio" hall and was fairly empty.

Yes, the Motor show girls mascots for sale in the Official Merchandise shop. Their names are Kyoko Azuma and Rinne Hajime and their dimensions are on the packet. Kyoko (is 158cm tall and 80cm- 52cm- 82cm.
Oh, and I bought the mascots.
Oh, and There were also cars, bikes and trucks.....

There were cool bikes

Lots of eco-friendly cars and big " we are environmentalists" advertisements

At the Toyota Auto body stand. Your attention was attracted by the crazy dancers
Watch them on the video

My favorite strange thing for the day was the Toyota Boshoku "Personal Relaxation Seat" which contained a "personal visual and sound system, aroma diffuser, ventilated and air-conditioned canopy and physical condition sensor". [according to Reuters]. The queue was about 20 - 30 minutes so we did not stay and try it.

View from outside

Very greek inspired?

No idea what, by my choice for the ugliest car at the show.

All the big car names were there

Smart cars are cute.

Yes we were both there...but I had the camera!

The Mazda Taiki [means atmosphere]concept cars look like they are from futuristic movie set

The Mazda Carol

Wow the Corvette stands out...I suppose it is no use paying a fortune for a' look at me' car if nobody notices you.

The Pivo2 concept car.
Nissan's marketing pamphlet explains that the car is equipped with an onboard robot that "appears on the dashboard recognises the facial image and infers the drivers condition. It not only gives necessary information for the operation, but also speaks to you to cheer you up or to soothe you accordingly. It is indeed like your partner"

The inside of the Pivo2 (Scanned from the catalogue). I am not actually sure I would want a perky little robot head trying to perk me up while I was driving.....No correction I definitely would not.

The crowd in front of the new Nissan GTR. It was the biggest crowd at the show, maybe 10 people deep .... and all taking photos of ...... a car.

Another Nissan car. This one was the RD/BX

The mini stand was one of our favorites. It had a d.j. and it worked hard at selling a cool hip image.

The Mini 'Clubman' up close.

The Toyota Hi-Ct, "Big but Speedy" says the catalogue.

The Lexus stand was dark and moody.

The Toyota RIN Show

The Toyota i-real. A personal mobility vehicle, during the RIN show

Hello, can I take your photo a few times...

One of the other strange things were the "Rabbit lights" at Patlite stand. Checking out the web gives the full story.....
"The Osaka Prefectural Police Department this year has reportedly purchased 800 rabbit-shaped roof-mount strobe lights for use on special patrol cars that cruise the streets around schools. Custom-built by warning equipment manufacturer Patlite, the blue bunny beacons are designed to win the admiration of children while they send the bad guys packing." - http://www.pinktentacle.com/tag/osaka

There were four huge halls.

Looking through the north Hall heading to the exit.
Actually we had a lot of fun at a surprisingly family friendly fair. Lots of kids and lots of prams.... well worth the visit.
