Takayama.Day trips
Takayama - 7-6-2007
After visiting the village of Shirakawa-Go with Min and Barry we headed on to have a look at Takayama. (Thankfully Min drove and Barry and I could taste test the local sake)The town feels like is a larger version of Tsumago/Magame. Very pretty, good shops to browse through. Quite different from Kyoto, the town itself is the focus, rather than the temples. I enjoyed the atmosphere. We will definitely come back again.
The historic centre of Takayama is well preserved, especially the :Preservation area"
Wandering the streets
The balls signify a sake brewery, take note!
Bottles for sale. The traditional wooden cups sit as on top some of the larger bottles.

Takayama - 17-8-2006 -The First Trip
We made a crazy decision and started to drive to Takayama from Tsumago at lunchtime (BTW Tsumago has its own photo page), not a good idea!, it took nearly 4 hours to get there and then another three to return home. In the end we only had about two hours to look around! The drive to Takayama was amazing. We drove through 30+ tunnels, some over a kilometer long and after each, nearly always driving over a very high bridge, with the clouds hanging over the mountains, it was a picturesque drive. Though a bit scary at times. Poor Pam had sun glasses on, sun glasses off for each tunnel
Takayama is famous for it's preserved part of town and for its festival.

Temple? convention centre?
Historic part of town (June 2007 - well one of the two parts of town worth seeing. The temple and Float hall are not beside the main historic area)

Entrance ticket to the Float hall.
Historic Floats
A pond in the Temple
Sake shop in the historic part of town.
