Kamakura .. Part 1 - in the Rain


We met friends in Kamakura and went as a group to the various shrines and then out for dinner.

Our first stop was a bamboo grove in a small temple. It would be hard to find without a map or a local but it was a nice experience. A small moment of peacefulness.

Great Buddha of Kotokuin

After a great Tempura lunch we took the train a short way out to see the big attraction of Kamakura. The great Buddha. I think I did prefer it to the other giant Buddha in Nara, but not by much.


At "13.35 meters is the second largest in Japan (second only to that in Nara's Todaiji). Thought to be cast in 1252, the statue was originally housed in a giant temple hall, but the building was washed away in a tidal wave." - wiki


I really like this shot from Pam. It really captures the feel of the site.


You can pay 20 yen (20 cents) and go inside the statue. It is not particularly exciting. But worth 20 cents.

The thing with these attractions is that once you have seen them, there is not much more to do, so a short visit and on the road again.



Hasedera- zen temple

This small temple near the great Buddha was a nice change. Famous for a large statue carved in wood, I rather enjoyed the garden.

This poor guy was sitting out protected from the rain. He carefully got his camera ready and started to point it at the cat sitting nearby. At the same time as he was about to shoot the cat decided that the man was a warmer spot to sit and walked and sat in his lap, making it nearly impossible to get a picture. Cats huh!

With the rain coming down we headed back to the hotel and ready to go out for dinner with friends.



Kamakura .. Part 1 - in the Sun


Well Day two and no rain. And the city literally changed overnight. This is definitely a town to come to when the sun shines. The beach changed the town from just another temple stop to something vibrant and with a real beach atmosphere.


The beach was crowded. We watched as we drove and for many kilometers there were lines on surfers in the water waiting to catch a wave. It was very flat, it is hard to believe that they found any waves at all.


Oh, and Mt Fuji looking down on us. Forgot to mention that.
