Melbourne 'world's top city'
"Melbourne has retained its position as the best city in the world to call home.
Often derided as Bleak City by Sydneysiders, Melbourne topped a survey of 130 cities, narrowly beating out the other four Australian capitals surveyed - because its weather rated the best.
Sydney lost ground because its crime rate was rated on a par with New York and London". - The Age Newspaper

Melbourne.Zoo
A once in a lifetime experienceThe Melbourne Zoo is somewhere that we have visited for many years. The landscapes are pretty and the animals interesting. This is the first time we have visited with the digital camera.

Entrance to the zoo

The tiger watched s from the back of the enclosure.

The pelicans had the run of the place

They were not worried about me at all

Elephant art

Terrible photo but the elephants were in their night pen. They have huge enclosures where they wander around through the day. We were at the zoo pretty early, so they were still indoors. This one was determined to get some hay that he could see. He tried very hard to get to it. Over the top of the pen and under the bottom of the pen.

You can just make out the first strands. But in the end there was not success.
Over at the orunatang enclosure there was a lot of shouting going on. Thankfully not the children, but thenearby gibbonss were yelling at the top of their voices. Noisiest enclosure at the zoo...by far!

If you look carefully you can see two orangutans hiding under a blanket

Here they are close up

keeping warm

Ostriches never look happy

Giving me the eye.

hungry giraffes

with big lips

And very intertwined

zebras

A very casual kangaroo. Not very active, but just relaxing and taking it all in.

OK sleep now

more kangaroo shots

And a wombat soaking up the sun

Koalas are not normally active through the day. Not likely much to see.

And there they were

Not much of a shot of the echidna. You can see a foot if you look hard, otherwise it looks dead.

Who chewed that box

The Avery is a great place to watch the less popular birds and just listen to the noises.

We stood under this guy for about five minutes straining to see another black cockatoo. Then looking up we got a bit of a shock. He didn't like my camera though. Too many noises.

Walking through the avery

A cute Kookaburra

Sleeping snow leopard

hungry bear

the old fashioned sign leading to the always popular lion enclosure. There are now only four lions at the zoo. All brothers.

They could hear the workers at another enclosure and I guess that the truck noises reminded them of the truck noises for the truck that brings them food as they were quite excited.

Big teeth

And a suprise.....A Japanese garden at the zoo from our sister state in ....Aichi Japan! and our old home of Nagoya

The garden was pretty

At the end of our morning we saw some tree kangaroos (From PNG, not Australia). Usually they are way up in a tree and difficult to see but this morning they were out and about.

You cannot call them pretty.

Not all kangaroos are big. This little Quokka was pretty cute.
